Tasawwuf: The Spiritual Soul of Islam & The Awliya of Karnataka

“Sufism is nothing other than the station of Ihsan (spiritual excellence) taught by the Holy Prophet ﷺ: to worship Allah as though you see Him.”

1. The Reality of Authentic Tasawwuf

In the terminology of the Holy Quran and Hadith, Tasawwuf is known as Tazkiyah-e-Nafs (Purification of the Soul) and Ihsan (Spiritual Excellence). As Sultan-ul-Awliya Sayyiduna Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani (R.A.) emphasized in Ghunyat-ut-Talibeen and Al-Fath ar-Rabbani, authentic Tasawwuf is impossible without strict adherence to the Shariat. Shariat is the root; Tariqat is the branch; Haqiqat is the flower; and Ma’rifat is the fruit.

True Sufis are the greatest champions of the Sunnah. They conquered hearts not with swords, but with exemplary character, hospitality, selfless service, and overflowing love for all creation.

2. The Four Recognized Spiritual Paths (Salasil-e-Arba’a)

Jamat Ahle Sunnat Karnataka recognizes and respects the four major orthodox spiritual chains of the Subcontinent:

1. Silsila-e-Qadriya

Founded by Sayyiduna Ghaus-e-Azam Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani (R.A.) of Baghdad. Characterized by steadfast adherence to the Shariah, high spiritual resolve, and abundant zikr.

2. Silsila-e-Chishtiya

Propagated by Sultan-ul-Hind Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Gharib Nawaz (R.A.) of Ajmer. Renowned for its motto ‘Love all, Hate none’, selfless public service, and langar.

3. Silsila-e-Naqshbandiya

Traced to Khwaja Bahauddin Naqshband (R.A.) and Mujaddid Alf-e-Sani (R.A.). Emphasizes silent zikr (Zikr-e-Khafi), mental presence, and intellectual revival of the Sunnah.

4. Silsila-e-Suhrawardiya

Traced to Shaykh Shihabuddin Suhrawardi (R.A.) and Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya Multani (R.A.). Known for disciplined contemplation, social service, and Islamic learning.

3. The Sufi Heritage of Karnataka & The Deccan

The soil of Karnataka is blessed by centuries of Sufi luminaries who established centers of learning, humanitarian dining halls (Langar-khanas), and inter-communal peace throughout the region:

  • Hazrat Khwaja Bande Nawaz Gesudaraz (R.A.) — Kalaburagi (Gulbarga Sharif): The monumental scholar and Chishti master whose Persian and early Dakhni treatises laid the foundation of moral enlightenment in the Deccan.
  • Hazrat Sayed Hashim Peer Dastageer (R.A.) — Vijayapura (Bijapur): The eminent Qadiri master whose spiritual benevolence nurtured harmony, scholarship, and justice during the Adil Shahi period.
  • The Sufis of Bidar, Belagavi, and Hubballi: Spiritual towers who safeguarded the faith, established charitable institutions, and welcomed travelers of all backgrounds.

4. Practical Steps of Sufi Tazkiyah for Modern Youth

In our distracting digital era, JASK encourages young Muslims to adopt the timeless spiritual disciplines of the Awliya:

  1. Taharat & Fardh Namaz: Punctuality in the five daily prayers with congregation.
  2. Muraqaba & Zikr-ullah: Devoting 15–20 minutes daily to silent meditation, Astaghfar, and Durood Shareef.
  3. Taharat-e-Luqma (Halal Sustenance): Guarding oneself strictly against usury, bribery, fraud, and illicit income.
  4. Khidmat-e-Khalq: Actively volunteering to feed the hungry, visit the sick, and comfort the distressed.
