Tawassul aur Waseela ka Saboot - Quran o Hadith se

Aqeedah & Fiqh • Ahle Sunnat wal Jama’at • Padhne ka waqt: 8 minute

Tawassul ka matlab hai Allah Ta’ala ki bargah me kisi pasandida zariye (waseela) se dua karna, jaise Allah ke asma-e-husna, apne nek amal, kisi nek bande ki dua, ya Nabi-e-Kareem ﷺ ka waseela. Ahle Sunnat ke nazdeek ye jaiz aur Quran o Sunnat se sabit hai. Is guide me hum daleel, 4 qismen, shirk se farq, aur aam sawalat ke jawab dekhenge.

Mukhtasar jawab

  • Tawassul me maangne wala sirf Allah se maangta hai; waseela sirf zariya hai.
  • Quran ne “wabtaghu ilayhil-waseelah” keh kar waseela talash karne ka hukm diya.
  • Hazrat Usman bin Hunaif (RA) ki hadith aur Hazrat Umar (RA) ka Hazrat Abbas (RA) se dua karwana is ki bunyadi daleelen hain.
  • Shirk tab hai jab kisi ko Allah ke barabar ya Allah ke siwa khuda/mustaqil haajat-rawa samjha jaye.

Tawassul aur waseela ka matlab

Arabi me waseela us cheez ko kehte hain jis se kisi maqsood tak qurb ya rasai hasil ho. Tawassul isi se bana hai: yani Allah ki qurbat aur qabuliyat-e-dua ke liye kisi maqbool zariye ko aage karna. Dua ke adaab me bhi ulama ne likha hai ke dua se pehle Allah ki hamd, durood sharif aur nek amal ka zikr qabuliyat ke asbab me se hai.

Yaad rahe: maangne wala, dene wala aur sunne wala sirf Allah hai.

Ae iman walo! Allah se daro aur Uski taraf waseela talash karo.

Is ayat me “waseela” ka lafz aam hai, is liye ulama ke nazdeek is me nek amal bhi shamil hain aur maqbool hastiyan bhi.

Agar ye log jab apni jaanon par zulm kar baithe the, aap ke paas aate, phir Allah se maafi maangte aur Rasool bhi un ke liye maafi maangte, to zaroor Allah ko bahut tauba qabool karne wala, meherban paate.

Ahle Sunnat is ayat ko Nabi-e-Kareem ﷺ ke waseele se maghfirat talab karne ki asal mante hain. Isi tarah Surah Al-Ahzab 33:56 me Allah aur Uske farishte Nabi ﷺ par durood bhejte hain, jo aap ke maqam-e-rafee ki daleel hai; aur durood sharif dua ki qabuliyat ka bara sabab mana gaya hai.

Hadith aur Sahaba ke amal se daleel

1. Hazrat Usman bin Hunaif (RA) ki hadith

Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, Musnad Ahmad

Ek nabeena sahabi Nabi ﷺ ke paas aaye aur sehat ki dua ki darkhast ki. Aap ﷺ ne unhe achhi tarah wudu karne, 2 rakat namaz padhne aur ye dua maangne ki talqeen farmayi:

Allahumma inni as’aluka wa atawajjahu ilayka bi-nabiyyika Muhammadin nabiyyir-rahmah…

2. Hazrat Umar (RA) aur Hazrat Abbas (RA)

Sahih Bukhari, Kitab al-Istisqa (hadith 1010)

Jab qaht pad jata to Hazrat Umar (RA) Hazrat Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib (RA) ke waseele se baarish ki dua karte aur farmate: “Ae Allah! Pehle hum apne Nabi ﷺ ke waseele se dua karte the to tu baarish deta tha, ab hum apne Nabi ﷺ ke chacha ke waseele se dua karte hain.”

Is amal se ye baat saaf hoti hai ke Sahaba Nabi ﷺ ki zindagi me aap ke waseele se dua karte the, aur baad me Nabi ﷺ ke qaraabat-daar ke waseele se. Is par Sahaba me se kisi ne inkar nahi kiya.

Tahqeeq ka note: Jo riwayaten sanad ke lihaz se mazboot nahi, unhe asal daleel ke taur par pesh na karein. Is article me sirf wo riwayaten bunyad hain jin ki sihat ulama ne bayan ki hai.

Tawassul ki 4 qismen

Qism Matlab Misal
Nek amal se Apne kiye hue khalis amal ko waseela banana Ghaar me phanse teen aadmiyon ka waqia (Bukhari o Muslim)

Pehli 3 qismon par lagbhag sab ulama mutaffiq hain; chauthi qism me Ahle Sunnat ka mauqif jawaz ka hai (dekhein neeche ikhtilaf).

Tawassul aur shirk me farq

Shirk ka matlab hai Allah ki zaat, sifaat ya ibadat me kisi ko shareek thehrana. Tawassul me banda ye aqeedah rakhta hai ke dene wala sirf Allah hai aur Nabi ﷺ ya koi wali sirf Allah ke izn se waseela hain. Is liye ise shirk kehna Quran ke us hukm ke khilaf hai jis me waseela talash karne ko kaha gaya.

Misal ke taur par: jaise koi arzi badshah tak pahunchane ke liye maqbool wazeer ka sahara le, magar faisla badshah hi ka hota hai. Ye sirf samajhne ke liye tashbeeh hai; Allah ki shan har tashbeeh se buland hai.

Shirk ki tafseel ke liye shirk kya hai, aur ghair-Allah se madad ke masail ke liye istighasa ka sahih matlab bhi padhein.

Ulama ka ikhtilaf: insaf ke sath

Dianat-daari ka taqaza hai ke ikhtilaf saaf bayan ho. Salafi/Ahle Hadith ulama amuman Asma-e-Husna, nek amal aur zinda nek shakhs ki dua se tawassul ko jaiz, magar Nabi ﷺ ya auliya ki zaat ya jaah se tawassul ko na-jaiz ya bid’at kehte hain, khaas kar wafat ke baad. Ahle Sunnat (Hanafi, Shafi’i, Maliki, Hanbali ke bahut se ulama) Nabi ﷺ aur saliheen ke waseele ko jaiz mante hain.

Is ikhtilaf ki buniyad zyada tar do nuqton par hai: Hazrat Usman bin Hunaif (RA) ki hadith ka mafhoom, aur wafat ke baad waseele ka hukm.

Aam sawalat (FAQ)

Kya wafat ke baad Nabi ﷺ ke waseele se dua maangna jaiz hai?

Ahle Sunnat ke nazdeek jaiz hai, kyunke Anbiya apni qabron me hayat-e-barzakhi ke sath hain, aur Nabi ﷺ ki shan aur maqam wafat se khatam nahi hota. Hazrat Umar (RA) ke daur me bhi aap ke waseele ki riwayaten naql hui hain. Tafseel ke liye Hayat-un-Nabi padhein. Jin ulama ka mauqif mukhtalif hai, wo isay sahih nahi samajhte; is ikhtilaf ka ehtaram karein.

Kya waseela ke baghair seedha Allah se dua karna kaafi nahi?

Seedha dua karna bilkul durust hai aur Allah har dua sunta hai. Waseela wajib nahi, balki qabuliyat ki umeed badhane ka mustahab tareeqa hai.

Waseela aur istighasa me kya farq hai?

Tawassul me banda Allah se maangta hai aur kisi ko waseela banata hai. Istighasa me kisi se madad talab ki jati hai. Ahle Sunnat ke nazdeek jab madad ka asal dene wala Allah hi samjha jaye to ye shirk nahi, magar ibarat aur aqeedah ki wazahat zaroori hai. Dekhein istighasa ka bayan.

Nabi ﷺ ke waseele se dua ke alfaz kya hone chahiye?

Sab se behtar wahi alfaz hain jo hadith me aaye: “Allahumma inni as’aluka wa atawajjahu ilayka bi-nabiyyika Muhammadin nabiyyir-rahmah”. Dua Allah se ho aur alfaz me Allah hi ko mukhatab rakha jaye.

Dua ki qabuliyat ke liye aur kya karna chahiye?

Halal rizq, khuloos, Allah ki hamd, durood sharif, aur wudu ke sath dua. Mazeed tafseel dua ke adaab me hai.

Mazeed padhein

Tawassul Ahle Sunnat ka maslak hai: dua sirf Allah se, waseela Uske mehboob bandon ka. Ghalat fahmiyon se bachein aur ikhtilaf me adab ka daman na chhodein.

Aqeedah & Fiqh • Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah • 8 min read

Tawassul means approaching Allah through a means (waseela) that is beloved to Him: His Beautiful Names, your own righteous deeds, the supplication of a pious person, or the status of the Prophet ﷺ. Ahl al-Sunnah hold it to be permissible and established by the Quran and Sunnah. This guide covers the evidence, the four types, how tawassul differs from shirk, and answers to common questions.

Short answer

  • In tawassul you ask Allah alone. The waseela is only a means, never the one who grants.
  • The Quran commands believers to “seek the means (al-waseelah) to Him.”
  • The hadith of Uthman ibn Hunayf (RA) and the istisqa of Umar (RA) through Abbas (RA) are the core evidences.
  • Shirk is regarding anything as equal to Allah, or as an independent granter of needs besides Him.

What tawassul and waseela mean

In Arabic, a waseela is anything that brings one closer to a goal. Tawassul is derived from it: putting forward an accepted means in order to draw near to Allah and hope for the acceptance of a supplication. Scholars also list it among the etiquettes of dua, together with praising Allah, sending salawat on the Prophet ﷺ, and mentioning one’s good deeds.

Remember: the One who is asked, who gives, and who hears is Allah alone. The waseela is neither a god nor a partner to God; it is only a means through which the servant hopes for acceptance.

Evidence from the Quran

Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:35

O you who believe! Fear Allah and seek the means (al-waseelah) to Him.

The word “waseelah” here is general, so scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah understand it to include righteous deeds as well as those whom Allah has honored.

Surah An-Nisa 4:64

If, when they wronged themselves, they had come to you and asked Allah’s forgiveness, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Ever-Relenting, Most Merciful.

Ahl al-Sunnah take this verse as a basis for seeking forgiveness through the Prophet ﷺ. Surah Al-Ahzab 33:56, in which Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, points to his exalted rank; and durood sharif is regarded as a great cause for the acceptance of dua. Note that Al-Ahzab 33:56 is supporting evidence about his station rather than a direct text on waseela.

Evidence from Hadith and the Companions

1. The hadith of Uthman ibn Hunayf (RA)

Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, Musnad Ahmad

A blind man came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked for a supplication for his sight. The Prophet ﷺ told him to perform wudu well, pray two rak’ahs, and then say:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ وَأَتَوَجَّهُ إِلَيْكَ بِنَبِيِّكَ مُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيِّ الرَّحْمَةِ

Allahumma inni as’aluka wa atawajjahu ilayka bi-nabiyyika Muhammadin nabiyyir-rahmah…
“O Allah, I ask You and turn to You through Your Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet of mercy…”

Imam al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan sahih gharib. Ahl al-Sunnah see it as a clear evidence for supplicating through the Prophet ﷺ.

2. Umar (RA) and Abbas (RA)

Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Istisqa (no. 1010)

In times of drought, Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) would ask for rain through al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (RA), saying: “O Allah, we used to seek rain through our Prophet ﷺ and You would send rain; now we seek it through the uncle of our Prophet ﷺ.”

This shows that the Companions sought a means in their supplications, first the Prophet ﷺ during his life, then his relative after him, and none of them objected.

The 4 types of tawassul

Type Meaning Example
Through Allah’s Names Supplicating by His Names and Attributes “O Most Merciful, have mercy on me”
Through righteous deeds Making a sincere good deed your means The story of the three men trapped in the cave (Bukhari and Muslim)
Through a pious person’s dua Asking a righteous person to pray for you Umar (RA) asking Abbas (RA) to make dua
Through the Prophet ﷺ Making his rank and intercession your means The dua taught to Uthman ibn Hunayf (RA)

Scholars almost unanimously agree on the first three; on the fourth, Ahl al-Sunnah hold it permissible (see the scholarly difference below).

Tawassul vs shirk

Shirk is to associate anything with Allah in His Essence, Attributes, or worship. In tawassul, the believer holds that the One who gives is Allah alone, and that the Prophet ﷺ or a saint is only a means by Allah’s permission. Calling it shirk contradicts the Quranic command to seek the waseelah.

An analogy, only to aid understanding: someone takes a respected minister along to reach a king, yet the decision is the king’s. Allah is far above any example.

For more detail, read what is shirk and the correct meaning of istighatha.

Scholarly difference of opinion

Fairness requires stating the disagreement clearly. Salafi/Ahl al-Hadith scholars generally allow tawassul through Allah’s Names, righteous deeds, and the dua of a living righteous person, but consider tawassul through the person or status of the Prophet ﷺ or of saints impermissible or an innovation, especially after death. Many scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah across the Hanafi, Shafi’i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools permit tawassul through the Prophet ﷺ and the righteous.

The disagreement centers mainly on how to understand the hadith of Uthman ibn Hunayf (RA) and on the ruling after death. Labeling one another as disbelievers or polytheists should be avoided.

Frequently asked questions

Is it permissible to seek tawassul through the Prophet ﷺ after his death?

According to Ahl al-Sunnah, yes, since the prophets are alive in a barzakhi life and the Prophet’s station does not end with death. Read more in Hayat un-Nabi. Scholars who hold a different view do not consider it valid; the difference should be treated with respect.

Is it not enough to simply ask Allah directly?

Asking Allah directly is completely valid and He hears every supplication. A waseela is not obligatory; it is a recommended way of increasing hope for acceptance.

What is the difference between tawassul and istighatha?

In tawassul you ask Allah and put someone forward as a means. In istighatha help is sought from someone. According to Ahl al-Sunnah it is not shirk when the true Helper is understood to be Allah, though clarity of wording and belief is essential. See our article on istighatha.

What words should be used when making tawassul through the Prophet ﷺ?

The best wording is what came in the hadith: “Allahumma inni as’aluka wa atawajjahu ilayka bi-nabiyyika Muhammadin nabiyyir-rahmah”. The dua is addressed to Allah, keeping Him as the one addressed.

What else helps a dua to be accepted?

Halal earnings, sincerity, praising Allah, sending durood, and being in wudu. More in etiquette of dua.
